IMPORTANT INFORMATION: FAQs - Manufacturing Date - What is the manufacturing date? The manufacturing date is shown near the line that says "Date PKD/LOT." It is often expressed in a modified Julian date format using a 4-digit code. The first digit represents the last digit of the year, and the next three digits indicate the day of the year it was packed. For example: 2110 The 2 represents the year 2022 (based on the last digit). The 110 represents the 110th day of the year, starting from January 1st — which equals April 20th. So, 2110 means the MRE was manufactured on April 20th, 2022. Note: The manufacturing date is typically three years prior to the original inspection date. Each meal will have the 4 digit code on the packaging, you can check each meal to verfiy the outside box Inspection Date - An inspection date is not an expiration date. MREs do not have an expiration date. The inspection date is the manufacturer's recommended date to re-inspect your MREs. This date is always three years after the manufacturing (pack) date. When the inspection date arrives, you should evaluate the MREs. If they pass inspection, they can be given an extension for another three years. This process can be repeated up to six times, allowing MREs to last up to 20 years. However, after 15 to 20 years, MREs begin to lose their nutritional value. Each MRE comes with an accessory bag containing flavorings, matches, toilet paper, and other survival necessities. Date PKD/Lot - Sometimes you’ll have the date packed such “01/09/23” which you know to mean January 9, 2023. However, some cases will use a different form (Julian Date) such as “3009”. In this case, the first number “3” stands for the year (2023) and the next three numbers indicate which day of the year (365 days in a year) it was packed. So “009” would be the 9th day of the year 2023 …or January 9, 2023. The packed date is the equivalent to the manufactured date of the case in it's entirety. INSP/TEST - The inspection date is just that, the manufacturer wants the consumer to open and inspect the food by this date. Once inspected you can consume accordingly, keeping in mind that some components can last longer than others and should be consumed with discretion. This date is the equivalent of a "soft" expiration date or "best used by" date. Keeping in mind that under proper storage condition some components will outlast others.
